I was born in the town of Cartago, Colombia, where tailoring was a popular trade. It was inevitable that I would continue my family’s legacy of craftmanship, as I was immediately influenced at a young age by my three uncles who tailored menswear suits, my grandmother who was an outstanding seamstress, and my mother who had a keen eye and true sense of style. Growing up surrounded by this wealth of artistic skill and expertise inspired me to study their craft and pursue my own fashion career.
Soon after moving to New York, I enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology where I received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. As a young designer, I worked for major design houses like Marc Jacobs and Liz Claiborne and also as a costume designer at the Academy of Dramatic Arts.
In 2000, I founded my own company, Guiomar, with a mission to make elegant clothing for unique women. I take inspiration for my handcrafted designs from the natural colors of the ocean’s sunsets and the serenity of the Pacific Island of Buenaventura, where I spent most of my childhood. I also incorporate into each of my designs four key elements: color, proportion, functionality, and comfort. Guiomar’s one-of-a-kind collection consists of timeless styles, each holding a story of theater, film, and fashion.
It is my goal to create a personalized, couture gown that will make you look and feel your best.
